A BATH FAMILY STORY · 1898 to 2026

Five generations of one family. One Bridge Street.

Edward Palmer Mallory began his career as a Jewellers Assistant in Cheltenham. He moved to Bath to work at Routley the jewellers at 1 Bridge Street, and in the summer of 1898 he bought the business. With his wife Margaret Turnbull he grew the shop into a fixture of Bath commerce. The shop is still on the same six Georgian buildings on Bridge Street one hundred and twenty-eight years later.

The grandson of the founder, Patrick Mallory, ran the antique jewellery and silver side through the post-war decades. Robert Vander Woerd, fourth generation, opened the dedicated watch department in 2005, making Mallory the first jeweller outside London to bring a multi-brand authorised offering to a retail business. His daughter Katie Vander Woerd FGA DGA, a Fellow of the Gemmological Association and Diamond Member, runs the firm today as the fifth generation.

“As the fifth generation, I feel immensely privileged to be able to continue to build on the heritage, brand and family values that have been created.” Katie Vander Woerd, The Bath Magazine, 2023

CUSTOMER QUESTIONS

What people ask before they visit.

Can I book a private appointment to view Patek Philippe or Rolex pieces?

Yes. Both showrooms host private appointments before opening or after close on request. Email enquiries@mallory-jewellers.com or phone 01225 788 800 with a brand and a window, and the team will confirm with a named consultant. The Patek Philippe and Rolex display rooms at Bridge Street are appointment-friendly Monday through Saturday.

Do you service watches that were not bought from Mallory?

Yes. The on-site workshop services Rolex, Patek Philippe, Omega and TAG Heuer under manufacturer accreditation, regardless of where the watch was originally purchased. Quotes are given before any work begins. Battery replacements are usually same week. Mechanical services take 4 to 12 weeks depending on parts.

Is the Old Bond Street shop a separate showroom?

It is the same family, the same workshop and the same accreditations. The Bridge Street premises (six Georgian buildings) carries the watch showrooms and the principal jewellery rooms. The smaller showroom at 5 Old Bond Street, a four-minute walk away, focuses on contemporary fine jewellery and Patek Philippe presentations. Stock can be moved between the two on request.

How long does a bespoke engagement ring take?

Allow eight to twelve weeks from first consultation to finished ring. Katie Vander Woerd FGA DGA hand-selects the centre stone, and a bench drawing is prepared before any work begins. Bench drawings are retained on file so a future anniversary band, eternity ring or wedding band can be designed to match years later.

Do you offer insurance valuations?

Yes, for jewellery and watches. Valuations are written on Mallory letterhead with full gemmology notes and photographs and are accepted by the major UK insurers. Single-item valuations are typically same-day; collections are usually completed within a week.
